Intelligence Squared Debate: Men Are Finished

Intelligence Squared is a program that arranges Oxford-style debates on a wide range of timely and provocative topics. For this debate, the proposition is MEN ARE FINISHED:

In a modern, post-industrial economy that seems better suited to women than men, many are wondering if men have been permanently left behind. Education and employment statistics point to a clear and growing dominance in women’s status at home and in the workplace. Are men primed for a comeback or have the old rules changed for good? Facebook COO: Women Need to Be More Assertive

A New Yorker piece on Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's COO and one of the most powerful women in business and technology, profiles her career and also outlines her perspective on women in the workplace (as well as criticisms of her view). Broadly, she thinks women get in their own way more than men get in their way, and that many problems would be solved by women being more assertive.

Johanna Blakley: Social Media and the End of Gender

Posted in

Another great TED talk. Johanna Blakely of the Norman Lear Center (a media-focused think tank at the University of Southern California) talks about how social media helps us "escape our demographic boxes" by making our age, income, and race harder to determine, while simultaneously offering more pointed information about our interests and likes. She goes on to talk about how women are the highest users of social media and what that could mean for the future.

Hillary Clinton TED Talk

TED Talks are always great, but I think this one is especially on point for the journal. Our Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton talks about empowering women and girls not only through a social lens, but also through a political one. It's a unique chance to hear about what is going on internationally, and especially what our government prioritizes and acts on in the realm of women's lives right from the source.

The Way We Live Now - The Empowerment Mystique

This article raises interesting points about the interaction of "feminism" and marketing. The author highlights the "sales potential in female pride." The author ends the article by conceding that "Despite knowing better, I just couldn’t shake the feeling that with the right school supplies, she could rule the world." In the end, I wonder whether it is completely contrary to feminism for a person to feel more confident because they purchased a new notebook?

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Here's an anti-rape campaign not based on telling women and girls how to protect themselves by constraining their right to be female at night, but on telling men not to rape. Check it out: http://www.mystrength.org/
